Posted by trev | Filed under Figure DrawingA quick look through the archives of this sketchblog will let you know that I am not expert using watercolors. Still, I do like the look of them over pen and ink linework and they are fun to use.
While I’ve been more or less happy with the results when I mix watercolors with my pen and ink linework, a weird thing happens when I try to use them over a drawing done with my Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. Everytime I try to mix the two, the watercolors end up looking more like they were done with crayon, even if I use the same paper I’ve used with the pen and ink (which, in the example above, is a Stillman & Birn Alpha series sketchbook).
I think they may reason for this is that since I tend to lay down thicker lines with the brush pen, and since my drawing style tends to lean towards the cartoony, the end result looks almost like a drawing you’d find in a coloring book.
I think more drawings with this combination are in order if I am to crack this puzzle.

Posted by trev | Filed under Figure DrawingI’ve written previously (here and here) about my recent experiences with the wonderful Alpha series sketchbooks from Stillman & Birn. Well, the fine folks there have sent me some other sketchbooks that they offer to try out.
The drawing above was done in one of their Gamma Series lines of books. Like the Alpha Series books, this sketchbook features a really nice high quality paper that holds up well to washes. The main difference with this series is that the Gamma line features an Ivory colored paper (as opposed to the Natural White of the Alpha line). Black ink looks great on the Ivory color and, as you can see above, watercolors work nicely on it as well.
These days, I tend to gravitate towards hardbound sketchbooks. I just like the feel of them better. This sample was wirebound. While the overall “feel” was not quite as nice as its hardbound brethren, the binding does have its advantages (ie. easier to lay flat, easier to remove pages). That said, I will be definitely be picking up a hardbound Gamma series book in the near future.
