A Drawing a Day 2012: Coltrane

Another year, another daily drawing project. Last year, I bought myself, and two of my friends, Moleskine daily planners. During the course of the year, the three of us each drew a drawing a day in our prospective books. By the end of the year, we each had a well worn book with 365 drawings in it.You can see some of the drawings I did in my book here.
Last year, I wanted a consistent look and feel in my book so I did each drawing with my Pentel Pocket Brush pen and added tone with the same color PITT Big Brush pen (Cold Grey III). As a result, the book looks fairly unified, despite the range of subject matter.
This year, I want to mix things up a bit. Keeping things consistent felt a little limiting by the end of the year, so this year I am going to mix up the tools I use over the course of the year. You can start to see a little bit of that in the drawing above. I used my Noodler’s Ahab Flex Pen for the linework. Tone was added with a PITT Big Brush Pen. It may seem like a minor difference, but it felt like a big shift after a year of sticking to the Pentel.
For those interested, the drawing above was drawn from a photo of jazz great John Coltrane taken by Francis Wolff, the legendary photographer who shot many of Blue Note’s great album covers. A cropped version of the photo was used on Coltrane’s albun Blue Train. I highly recommend Blue Note The Jazz Photography of Francis Wolff. I think it may be out of print, but it is well worth your shekels if you can find a copy.
