Brick & Sand

Introducing Brick & Sand: Life in Newburyport, Massachusetts, a new book of photography I self-published. For years, I have been taking photos in and around this scenic little city, trying to capture what makes this seaport such a popular tourist destination. This book collects some of my favorite shots, showing off Newburyport’s unique charm in a different light. To learn more or to order a copy, check out the book’s website.

A Picture a Day

Looking to take more photos, I have recently decided to embark on Project 365, a personal challenge to take one photo every day for 365 consecutive days. I began this little journey on the first of this month. Anyone interested in seeing my progress, can check out the set devoted to the results on my Flickr photostream.

Breakfast Song

After a prolonged absence, I was finally able to stop in on one of the Hush Hush Sweet Harlot music series at the Red Door in Portsmouth, NH recently. Instead of breaking out my sketchbook to do some doodles of the musicians, I brought my camera. The photo above is of Seth Gooby of the charming local duo Breakfast Song. See more photos from the night here at my Flickr photostream.

Spooky Tools

As I began updating the guts of the site, I decided I also wanted to broaden the scope of the content. I have always had an interest in photography, but that interest has really grown over the past couple of years, culminating in a recent purchase of my first digital SLR. As a result, I have been taking more and more photos (evident by the increased activity on my Flickr account).

I don’t think photography will ever replace my love of drawing, but I do think it can complement it, and make it better. Dabbling in photography not only helps my hone my eye for  pleasing compositions, but also helps me understand light better.

So look for this blog to a have a bit broader scope going forward. I plan on posting photographs I take, in addition to the drawings and illustrations that I have been posting. I have a lot to learn when it comes to photography, so I welcome any comments or suggestions anyone may have.

Crack of the Bat

Didn’t get much drawing done last week because I spent much of the week out of town. Had a business meeting in Tampa, Florida and then was able to take a couple of days off for myself to catch some Major League Baseball spring training action in Bradenton, the spring training home of my favortite team, the Pittsburgh Pirates. I had a blast and was able to take a bunch of photos to document the trip. You can see most of those here.

Portsmouth by Night

I’ve been trying to devote more time to messing around with photography. The technical aspects of it give me a headache, but I think I am slowly getting more comfortable with it.

Photography and illustration hold many common elements and I think the skills honed in one, help the ones in the other. Things like composition and color are universal. When my drawing gets in a rut, I find putting the pencil down and picking up the camera can sometimes break me out of it.

The following shot is shot taken in Portsmouth, New Hampshire shortly after sundown.
