A Small Wish

For the last couple of years, I’ve finished the majority of my published illustrations in Adobe Illustrator. I like to play around with shapes and flat colors, in almost a cut-out fashion. However, lately I’ve been trying to add a painterly element to my work by bringing the finished Illustrator drawing into Photoshop. I’ve been really been jiving on the look of the Little Golden Book series (look here and here for some examples of what I’m talking about).

The coffeehouse illustration I posted a little while ago was my first published attempt to move in this direction and I was generally pleased with the results. My second published attempt appeared in this Sunday’s Nashua Telegraph for an annual feature they do about “wish lists” for local charities.

I don’t think it turned out too bad, but I do think I learned a lesson from the result. The painterly effect (at least as far as my work goes) requires striking a delicate balance. Too little of it and it’s hardly noticeable. Too much of it and it can be a bit over-powering. In a early version of this one, I defintitely went a bit too far with it. I think I got it under control in the end, but I learned a little restraint goes a long way.
